Baghdad - Fact Finding Mission

A Fact Finding Mission at Baghdad University took place from December 2 to 4, 2010 by TU Bergakademie Freiberg represented by Prof. Dr. Broder Merkel, M.Sc. Sameh Wisam Al-Muqdadi, and Dr.Thomas Pohl. The visit was considered to be the first visit of foreign scientist at Baghdad University for more than 25 years of isolation. The goal of the visit at Baghdad University was to evaluate the opportunity to build up a long term cooperation between Baghdad University, College of Science, Geology Department and Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg in the field of geoscience with respect to both education and common research. A meeting with staff members was followed by visiting the laboratories which will be equiped by means of the DAAD funding with state of the art analytical devices (e.g.  ICP.MS, IC, XRD, XRF and others). It seems to be realistic that the scientific equipment will be operable by April 2011 if some requirements are met in the very near future. The general impression of the Uiversity campus and the situation in Baghdad was positive so that it will be very likely to have a DAAD summer university at Baghdad in 2011.

The fact finding mission at Baghdad was  incluidng a visit of the Iraqi state company Geological Survey which a pioneer institute for geological activities in Iraqi. During this visit Prof. Merkel and the General Director Dr. Khaldun Al-Bassam and his staff members discussed further cooperation.

Finally the TU BAF scientists visited Kut city south of Baghdad, where a dam on the Tigris river has been built in 1939 by the British.
