In order to actively support the reconstruction of Iraq, the DAAD initiated a program to strengthen the long-term cooperation of German and Iraqi universities. For a duration of initially three years five academic partnerships are supported. These 5 programms are:

  The major goals of GRI are:
  - Creating 2 joint master courses (Arid Hydrogeology and Water Management // Sustainable Oil Production)
  - Capacity buildiung at Iraqi universities
  - Organizing work shops, summer universities, and conferences
  - Initiate joint research programs (from PhD to integrated projects)
